GLEBE POINT ROAD CELEBRATIONS – NEW LOOK FOR AN OLD FAVOURITE
Posted in: Events
It’s been a long time coming but finally the Glebe Point Road streetscape upgrade is finished! In my book, it’s definitely a reason to celebrate. This Saturday 4th of April Glebe will be throwing a party to welcome the “new Glebe” to town!
There will be no more orange barriers blocking the roads, no more makeshift footpaths, no more roadwork and, most excitingly for Glebe, no more disruption to local business. There will be free coffee, roving street performers and entertainment! If you entered the Glebe “Shop & Win” competition, make especially sure you head down, as you could be the lucky winner riding away on a Vespa.
The iconic Glebe Markets, held every Saturday at Glebe Primary School, will also be on. The markets are a favourite not only with Inner West dwellers but market lovers from every corner of Sydney. In the midst of revamped surrounds, and with the Glebe Point Road Celebration taking place, this weekend’s markets look set to be bigger and better than ever.
Right next door to Pyrmont, Glebe is one of Sydney’s most unique and eclectic villages, and an old favourite of many. Hopefully the new look and recent makeover will see the bohemian identity Glebe is known for nurtured and developed. The new brand and identity is a playful Victorian imagery in a modern design setting that recalls Glebe’s “nostalgic, historic and literary nature and reflects our contemporary culture.” I’m not too sure how a suburb can have a “brand” but we will soon “notice different manifestations of our brand around town.” I can’t wait to see what they’re planning but hope they don’t turn the entire suburb into a branding exercise!
Glebe has been a shadow of its former self the past few months, but the new look and updated identity should see Glebe lovers Sydney-wide flocking to the charming Inner West village to see what’s new. The celebrations will kick-off at 11am and finish up at 1pm, with over a dozen cafes and local businesses participating in the free coffee offer. Pop down to Glebe for the celebration, the markets, the shops and the cafes on the weekend and let us know what you think of the new look for an old Sydney favourite.
