darling harbour fiesta_salsa dancing by delilah smithIf you love all things Latin American Pyrmont People, then get down to the Darling Harbour Fiesta this long weekend from Friday, 2 October to Monday, 5 October 2009. You can enjoy the hottest latin music, learn a little salsa dancing at Palm Grove, do some shopping at the Latin American market along the Urban Stream or sample some tasty Spanish and Latin American food in Tumbalong Park.

Over the weekend, there will be free performances by more than 70 Latin bands, DJs and dance groups covering Brazil, Chile, Venezuela, Uruguay, Colombia, Bolivia, Argentina and Cuba.

Australia’s largest Latin American festival, which has been running now for 18 years, will include some great bands such as Double Grammy Award winners Aterciopelados from Colombia, and Bailatino from Venezuela who will be performing in Australia for the first time. There will also be many other performers across the 3 stages in Darling Harbour – Tumbalong Park, Palm Grove and the Harbourside Amphitheatre, Aquashell. You will also get the opportunity to see world class salsa champions, tango experts, Spanish flamenco dancers, folk dancers and Brazilian Carnivale girls and Capoeira masters, as well as talent from So You Think You Can Dance and Dancing with the Stars.

The food will include paella, tapas, Spanish churros, tacos, empanadas, enchiladas and complete it with a Colombian coffee and Argentinean alfajore cookies. After a great meal, stop by the markets where you can shop for South American football merchandise, Cuban CDs, leather goods, tapestries and ceramics from Peru and Inca jewellery. Or you can work off your meal with some dancing at the Harbourside Aquashell during the evening Fiesta Nights.

And, be sure to check out the spectacular fireworks on Sunday night.
