Come Saturday and it’s often difficult to decide what to do – a relaxing day spent wandering one of the many markets dotted around Sydney, or a social beer or two down at the local? Thankfully we no longer need to make such difficult decisions, as established locals near Pyrmont, Fringe Bar and Cricketers Arms combine two of our favourite pastimes with their innovative indoor markets.

It’s no surprise that Fringe Bar has recently started offering a fabulous array of fashionable market stalls, given that it’s located at the Paddington end of Oxford Street (106 Oxford St, Paddington, 02 9331 3301), one of the most fashion savvy areas of Sydney. Every Saturday, from 10am – 5pm, both the front and back bars are transformed into a treasure trove of up-and-coming local fashion designers, vintage and retro clothing collectors, jewellery designers, and fortune tellers. These markets are also friendly on the budget, and a lot less likely to break the bank than the surrounding boutiques – which of course won’t stop anyone from a spot of wishful window-shopping. Take a break from the heat outside, grab a drink in the luxurious surroundings, and browse through the seemingly endless piles of goodies on offer in this dark gem of a market – all whilst being entertained by the live DJs. The exposed brickwork, red velvet curtains and chandeliers definitely make for a unique indoor market experience.

The Cricketers Arms is a popular, laid back local with a great tapas menu, making it easy to fill a lazy Saturday with a trip to the markets, a drink and a bite to eat. Like Fringe Bar, fashionable boutiques, and cafes surround Cricketers Arms.

For something different to do on a Saturday, organize your own market stall with a few friends at either Fringe Bar or Cricketers Arms – take along your pre-loved fashion that’s been waiting to find a new home and you’ll even make a few extra dollars!

This new style of market shopping is a welcome addition to the growing range of markets in and around inner Sydney – and something a little different to what’s currently on offer. Hopefully the future will see the continuing rise of alternative market spaces such as these – just be wary of a few too many drinks around so many fabulous bits and pieces for sale!
