The UPTown Festival is now in its 27th year and, while a resident in Pyrmont for many years, I was not aware of it – up until now that is. So armed with my new found knowledge, I was keen to check it out.

Tucked away in Quarry Green and away from the main roads, the location is perfect for families with children. The intimate setting offers a large area of green grass to sit back and enjoy the music and festivities and is surrounded by beautiful, shady trees. This was an added bonus considering it was a warm and sunny day.

In speaking to one of the organisers from the Uniting Care Harris Street Community Centre, Ken Saunders, the UPTown Festival began at a time when the Pyrmont/Ultimo area was run down and the event was used as a way to lift the community spirit. With the now rapid growth of these inner city suburbs, the Festival provides a great way to bring the community together and gives a “chance to meet their neighbours.”

On arrival you definitely feel the warmth and friendliness of the Pyrmont and Ultimo communities. The theme of the Festival this year was a Pool Party, to reflect with the opening of the Ian Thorpe Acquatic Centre, and there was also a photo exhibition of the Australian Women Champion Swimmers.

The mood was fun and festive with one visitor from the US highlighting this on her travel blog. There were lots of activities for the kids including face painting, pony rides, a jumping castle and a bungee trampoline. I enjoyed the buzz of activity, the music and the smiles on lots of people’s faces. A range of stalls were setup including a funky jewellery store and a Turkish Gozleme – yummy! I even had the chance to pat a very cute albino lizard.

This year the Festival attracted around 5,000 visitors. Ken mentioned that “a key feature is that all of the rides are free”. With a wide demographic and incomes, this is important as any family can come along and join in the fun. Kids get to enjoy activities such as trampoline bungee for free and there are no showbags and, therefore, no pressure on the parents to have to buy them.

The UPTown Festival is certainly a fun, as well as an affordable, day out for the family and it is great to see that the community spirit is alive and well!
