Highlighted below are just a couple of studies from a small but expanding body of investigation suggesting that IVF acupuncture can help you to enhance your pregnancy outcomes.

A study undertaken by the University of Adelaide fertility centre, Repromed, in 2006 indicated that by using acupuncture fertility numbers numbers during embryo transfer can be doubled. It was also noted that IVF acupuncture is safe and there are no adverse effects

In 2008, a review by the British Medical Journal (BMJ) revealed that acupuncture can increase the chance of success for couples seeking to have a baby through IVF. The review combined the results of seven studies in which 1,366 women undergoing IVF were given acupuncture within 24 hours of the embryo being transferred to the women’s wombs. Overall, the results showed that women having acupuncture can increase their chances of falling pregnant by 65 per cent and it also boosts the probability of a live birth by 91 per cent. Although, the authors of the BMJ study did say that their findings were only “preliminary evidence” and the results might have inflated the positive effect of acupuncture. (1) (2)

The results of the BMJ review were welcomed by Associate Professor Peter Illingworth, medical director of the Sydney-based clinic IVF Australia,  who said “What this new study shows is that this effect is statistically significant, and is real”. And while there were many complementary treatments claiming to boost fertility, the new study confirmed that acupuncture was one of the few that actually worked. (1) (2)

While it is not that well understood how fertility is impacted by acupuncture, theories include the release of hormones which control the menstrual cycle, increasing the blood circulation to the ovaries and uterus, hence make the lining of the womb more receptive to the implantation of the embryo, as well for stress and anxiety relief. Acupuncture has been used in China for centuries to help with reproduction, and is growing in popularity for couples undergoing IVF to help conceive.
