Chippendale Art Gallery: Memorial Exhibition of the Late John Ogburn 1925 – 2010

John Ogburn in the Landscape Chippendale Art Gallery: Memorial Exhibition of the Late John Ogburn 1925 2010 An exhibition of paintings and drawings by the late John Ogburn will be showing at the artists’ co-operative which he founded, the Harrington Street Gallery in Chippendale. The exhibition, opening on Sunday 10 October 2010 from 10:00am until 12:00 noon, will display works chosen from the last four or five decades of the artist’s life, revealing his extraordinary range and depth.

It celebrates a life devoted to painting and a commitment to developing what Ogburn termed ‘seeing’ as distinct from ‘looking’. Ogburn’s optimism and hope in painting were aroused in him by the world of nature rather than the world of man.

He saw our natural world as a source of never-ending renewal and revelation. His paintings and landscapes, nudes and still-lifes breathe forth an air of exuberance, vitality and hope. He developed an increasing ability to ‘see’ as distinct from just looking during 60 years of painting. It is this that enabled him to paint a too familiar, habitual world revealing a fresh vision presaging a hope that would overcome depression and boredom. John Ogburn continued to paint his optimistic works until the year before his passing on 13th January 2010.
