It’s that time of year again. The holiday season, and the constant socialising, not to mention the current financial situation all seem to be putting extra strain on the wallet. With school out for the Summer, we can throw entertaining kids into the mix, and come February we’ll be wishing we’d been more sensible than silly. So here at Pyrmont Village we’ve put together some local activities sure to keep kids and adults alike entertained, without the associated dent in the wallet.

It’s easy to entertain the whole family at one of Sydney’s many galleries and museums – from the traditional to contemporary art, and from history to science, it’s almost impossible not to find somewhere to suit your interests. Currently showing at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Circular Quay, is, amongst other exhibitions, To Make a Work of Timeless Art: Primavera Acquisitions. A number of works by former Primavera artists – emerging Australian artists, many of whom are now well established in their careers, are showcased for the public – and it’s free entry, although the museum does rely on donations.

For the kid in all of us there’s the Star Wars exhibition at the Powerhouse¬† Museum, just around the corner from Pyrmont in Harris Street – with tickets from $12, it’s the perfect day out for the family. And if that doesn’t tickle your fancy, don’t forget the Maritime Museum or the Art Gallery of NSW .

With the summer weather finally settling in though many of us might prefer to wander outside. The Glebe Foreshore Walk is a lovely way to pass a weekend morning – why not stop in on the Fish Markets on the way? Or wander to the Chinese Gardens in Darling Harbour, a glimpse into a different world right in the centre of the city.

Darling Harbour is also the place to be during the holidays, where the scheduled events should keep the family entertained – the festivities started on November 29th with a Christmas concert and the lighting of the tree, and continued with Christmas carols through to Christmas Eve. A big celebration will take place on Australia Day, with festivities starting at 11:30 am and concluding with a Spectacular fireworks with audio and visual effects starting at 8:50 pm.

So despite the holiday season being upon us, there’s no need to empty the wallet entertaining yourself or the family. Use your imagination, and you’ll be surprised at how easy it can be!
