Hey Pyrmont People was inspired with the many activities held throughout National Recycling Week and it started me thinking about where one can shop for second hand and recycled goods in and around Pyrmont Village. The great news is that there are many options available for those of you seeking to be a little more sustainable.

Visit ICONS2 at City Clayworkers Gallery Pyrmont Art Lovers

Visit the “ICONS2″ exhibition by Sheila Myers and Janette Loughrey at City Clayworkers Gallery Co-op in Glebe, just a short stroll from Pyrmont Village. Enjoy a glass of wine and meet the artists at the opening on Saturday, 15 November from 2:00pm - 5:00pm. The exhibition runs until Sunday, 23 November.

Both Janette Loughrey and Sheila Myers are long standing members of this well known co-operative, which has been in Glebe for very many years.

Janette’s pieces are personal, she is depicting Icons as having important meaning for the various stages of her artistic career. Handbuilding of large forms satisfies hergreatly,and the decoration is an added challenge, and this has worked wonderfully.

Another avenue she explores constantly is “Raku” firing, an” instant” firing technique which gives an immediate result, can be wonderful,good, or indifferent, but always has an excitement about it.

Janette’s major body of work, however, must be her highly decorative domestic ware. We all know her by these pieces, they are very typically Her, and tremendously popular too.

Sheila has opted to concentrate on Australian Icons. Certainly not personal, and not having any philosophy about ceramics, she just enjoys the hands-on bit. All those items dear to the Australian psyche are on display, from barbecue to blowfly, white ants and thongs. She has added printmaking to her pieces, not incorporated, but for the sheer joy of a bit of lino cutting.

Janette and Sheila have often worked together for exhibitions. As Clayworkers’ members they have opportunities to present these shows when and as they wish. There is a lot to be said for belonging to a co-operative.

Join in the Fun at Glebe Street Fair Pyrmont

Take a short stroll from Pyrmont to the Glebe Street Fair this Sunday, 16 November 2008. Now in it’s 25th year, this year’s event has a Circus theme. There will be roving street performers, bands, rides for the kids, Pony Express and a baby animal farm.

The Glebe Street festival will run for a kilometre along Glebe Point Road and include more than 200 stalls with funky and quirky offerings as well as delicious international food. There will also be flamenco dancers and a Poet’s Corner so you can share you poetry or writing with the crowd. For those of you who would like to debate or argue a point, step up on the great debaters milk crate.

Enjoy the great music on one of the many stages. Not only does the fair cater to the young and old but also for the four-legged family members, with a Doggie Olympics and a “Doggie Fashionista”.

Come along and join in the fun with the community - more than 100,000 people are expected!

Event For Pyrmont Cycling Enthusiasts

The Big Bike Love and 2008 International Bicycle Film Festival wrap up party is at Pyrmont this Sunday, 16 November 2008. Run throughout November, these events are part of a month-long celebration of Sydney’s different cycling communities including art, fashion, film and parties.

The Pyrmont wrap party picnic will be held in Pyrmont Park and include Vegetarian Food (BYO BBQ if you would prefer meat), smoothies and cocktails, an alleycat/treasure hunt, bike polo, harbour jumps, roller races and a solar powered Boom box.

The day will begin with meeting at the Cheeky Transport bicycle shop in Newtown. Leaving from there at 1pm, you then have your choice of racing or cruising the kid friendly bikepath through the inner west, the Sydney Fish Markets and then onto Pyrmont Point Park.

Everyone is welcome, you just need to ride your bike. Join in and celebrate Sydney bike culture.

The 2008 Walk Against Warming event, will reinforce the need to reduce energy use and increase efficiencies, introduce better public transport systems, move to renewable energy, place a price on carbon pollution and end logging and land clearing of old growth forests.

While Australians are pitching in to reduce their carbon footprint, this is not enough to stop global climate change. We need industries, government and the community to work together to achieve greater reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

Hey Pyrmont Village, Visit NSW’s Largest Artist Studios Open Weekend

Did you know that the largest artist studios in NSW are right on your doorstep Pyrmont Village? one+2 Artist Studios in Rozelle houses around 50 artists working in a huge variety of different styles and disciplines media including painting, sculpture, glass, ceramics, installation and mixed media.

Once a year the doors to the studios are thrown open and the general public is invited to visit. This year’s Open Weekend is on 29th and 30th November from 10am to 5pm and offers a unique opportunity to meet the artists in their studio environment. Take a look around, stop and chat about the art production process and you may even be inspired to buy work direct from some of the artists!

The studio will also be staging a group exhibition to illustrate the variety of talent, styles and imagery that the creative studio relationship fosters. A percentage of funds raised from the exhibition will be donated to The Smith Family.

So what can you expect to see? Long-term one+2 artist, Ursula Kolbe has been with the studio for ten years. “For some years I’ve been exploring ways to integrate fragments of handwritten words within the barest suggestions of landscape. I am fascinated by the power of almost unreadable words to evoke memories”, explains Ursula. She paints with oils and oil sticks on canvas or wooden panels, using thin glazes and sometimes beeswax. Her beautiful, atmospheric works proved hugely popular at a recent exhibition at Charles Hewitt gallery and you can see more examples at the Open Weekend.

Another of the one+2 Artists, Rone Waugh, has been with the studio nearly two years. His cubist-inspired paintings of the human figure are painted in vivid acrylics over a beeswax base. He explains, “I’ve always found the human form a source of inspiration. And being at the studio offers a second source of inspiration, via the other artists’ positive feedback”.

Recent National Art School graduate, Ochre Lawson, will be showing a range of work including ceramic figurative sculptures, forms made from wire and paper mache, works on paper and some paintings. “Although I’ve covered a few different mediums, my general source of inspiration surrounds nature and people’s place within it”, explains Ochre. “It is a theme I’ve been exploring for the last eight years as an artist and I’m still excited about it. My most recent work explores human’s animal instinct and how we relate to our environment.”

Housed in a converted Rozelle warehouse, 1+2 Artist Studios has been operating since 1991, when it opened with just 7 artists in residence. Today the studios house around 50 artists and continue to be a centre for creative talent in the inner west. The artists work in different media including painting, sculpture, glass, ceramics, installation and mixed media.

Studio Director, Rogerio Blanc-Ramos, believes that the unusually large group of artists works well together, because the co-operative studio environment encourages artists to think outside of their individual boundaries.

“The space encourages a cross-fertilisation of ideas which is a continual challenge and source of inspiration to all of the artists”, says Mr Blanc-Ramos. “Our open weekend is a unique opportunity for people to get behind the scenes and see what goes on before art arrives in the pristine white spaces of commercial galleries. We find that that it breaks down barriers between the artist and the public, creating an environment where people are much more comfortable discussing, approaching and enjoying art”.

Another of the studio artists, Ian Thomas, has been at one+2 for 8 years. “I had my first solo exhibition in the studio’s gallery space in 2001 and I’m now preparing for my 8th solo show in March next year at Danks Street Depot. It’s been the perfect place to develop my painting style, to share ideas and to receive advice and criticism from more experienced artists. I do think it’s a completely unique space – and there’s nowhere else like it in the area”, he said.

Support National Recycling Week Pyrmont People

Now in its 13 Year, National Recycling Week this year runs from Monday, 10 November to Sunday, 16 November 2008. Founded by Planet Ark, this event was developed to raise awareness of how recycling helps to reduce our environmental footprint and encourage us all to recycle more and recycle better.

With OECD reports showing Australia to be one of the world’s largest per capita producers of waste - at an whopping 2.25 kilograms per person per day - we need to take action and now!

Drop off recycling facilities near Pyrmont can be located at http://www.recyclingnearyou.com.au/council/SydneyNSW . Here you can take Large Recyclable Items such as white goods; Containers and/or Packaging such as paper and cardboard; Garden Organic/Food Waste such as tree branches and grass clippings; and Hazardous Materials such as paint and tyres.

Pyrmont Reviews: Burn After Reading

Hey Pyrmont People, if you are thinking of seeing Burn After Reading check out our review by Denieal Williams.

In their follow-up to the Oscar winning No Country For Old Men, Ethan and Joel Coen return to their signature twisted form of storytelling in the dark comedy Burn After Reading.

Laughably named Osborne Cox (John Malkovich) leaves his job as a CIA agent after being seemingly demoted for a drinking problem. Resentful of what he feels to be a politically motivated ‘crucifixion,’ Osborne decides to write a tell-all memoir about the CIA.

Meanwhile unbeknownst to him, his harsh and unforgiving wife Katie Cox (Tilda Swinton) has been having an affair with Federal Marshal Harry Pfarrer (George Clooney). Harry, married to a famous Children’s Writer, has the distinction of never firing his weapon in over 20 years of active service.

A disk containing Osborne’s personal files and information Katie has been gathering to begin divorce proceedings ends up in the hands of two dimwitted gym employees. Hardbodies Fitness Center employee, Linda Litzke (Frances McDormand) is on the search for love. Of course to find this love she has to transform herself through multiple plastic surgeries. But her ‘transformation’ isn’t covered by insurance and she is desperate to get the money. When her co-worker Chad Feldheimer (Brad Pitt) procures a disk from the janitor that he thinks has classified government information; the two embark on an adventure to try to blackmail the owner of the disk.

The film starts off brilliantly which is almost a given with heavy weights like George Clooney, Brad Pitt and John Malkovich. Clooney is convincing as the ineffectual and sleazy Harry Pfarrer and Malkovich is hilarious as the bitter self-important Osborne. Yet all the characters are trapped in one dimension by the Coen brothers seemingly smug need to make them beside the point. Mid-film the brothers seem to loose interest in developing the characters and the story further.

Because of this the film looses its potency and it’s frustrating when murder becomes a plot device for resolution. The comic misadventures and intriguing interconnectedness of the characters lives is undermined by an underdeveloped conclusion and what seems to be an attempt to float on the charisma of the protagonists. One can’t help but feel ‘meh’ about Burn After Reading, which is a shame when so much talent is involved. Like a punchline stretched too far this film fails to deliver a satisfying conclusion.
