Every Saturday, rain or shine, the grounds of Glebe Primary School, just a short stroll from Pyrmont Village, are transformed into a bohemian delight, and each week hundreds of Sydneysiders flock to socialise, shop, snack and absorb the atmosphere of Glebe Markets.

If you become a regular visitor to the Glebe Markets you will eventually find almost anything you can imagine or desire. New and recycled fashions abound – whatever it is you find – clothing, jewellery or accessories – it’s sure to be as unique as you. Book stalls, record stalls and stalls that will remind you a grandma’s attic are also plentiful and whether browsing or buying the time is sure to fly.

If shopping isn’t your idea of a relaxing Saturday morning you can sit on the grass and watch the entertainment – a variety of live music and performance, and the people watching can be almost as entertaining as the best of the live acts!

Come afternoon, after a busy morning, food will most likely be foremost on your mind – and you won’t be lost for choice. The markets offer a range of food stands – from Turkish gozleme to organic soups and salads. If a cafe sounds more your style you need only cross the road to find Glebe institutions such as Fair Trade, Badde Manors and Well Connected4. After lunch, or a snack, head toward the middle of the markets where you’ll find a stall offering well deserved massages for the end of a long week.

Not only are all markets a fabulous way to spend a spare Saturday, you can rest assured that they’re an environmentally friendly way to pass the time – buying recycled goods is an easy way to vastly reduce your impact on the environment. Plus they have the added benefit of bringing an increased sense of community to the Inner West, and supporting local small businesses.

If you plan on visiting the markets be sure to walk or take public transport – not only won’t you be troubled by parking, but you’ll be making a positive impact on the environment by keeping one more car off the roads.

Wherever you might be in Sydney, the Glebe Markets are worth at least one visit – but once you’ve experienced all there is to offer you’re sure to return. If you live in Pyrmont you’re luckier than most – it’s only a short stroll from your front door.
