Jodie, Founder & Designer, Bholu

jodie friend bholu 140x140 Jodie, Founder & Designer, Bholu1. Tell us a little about your business
Bholu combines Australian designs with traditional embroidery techniques by local women artisans in Western Gujarat, India, to create contemporary rugs, homewares, slippers, journals and kid’s toys. “Bholu” is a term of endearment to a small child, often a grandchild, and is used by the Kaatchchi community in this region. Not only is Bholu fairtrade and climate neutral but a % of profits also go back to the community. Stockists are available around Pyrmont. We are very excited to have been announced the winner of the 2008 NSW Telstra Business Award for Social Responsibility.
2. What inspired you to start Bholu?
I fell in love with the people and the country after living in India for a couple of years. After the earthquake in 2001, I went to assist with building and decorating huts in the Kutchchh dessert region in Western Gurajat. I experienced wonderful hospitality from the people and became very close with the artisan women. Their art and skill amazed me and I thought that I had to do something with it. I headed back to the region with my designs a few years later and ahcieved some exciting results which then started the way for production.

Bholu provides me with the opportunity to combine my love for India and the people, with my design work and a great challenge! It is very much about supporting the women artisans with fair trade and enabling them to achieve independence and financial support.

3. Who would be your dream next door neighbour?
It would have be a block of 4 flats with Peter Cundall ( organic gardening guru), Jamie Oliver (for neighbourly cookathons), lovely Heath Ledger (just for a lovely neighbour) and Mahatma Ghandi ( for neighbourly peace).

4. What are your 3 favourite movies of all time?
“The Royal Tenenbaums”- LOVE those matching tracksuits and “Osama”, a heartbreaking insight into Afghani culture during the Taliban regime and I adore stunning palette of the burka colours and Afghani landscape and finally Lars von Trier’s “Breaking The Waves”.

5. What are you reading at the moment?
I have a few books by my bed depending on my mood. Currently in the stack you will find the book “Dumbo Feather Pass it On”, “The Lifeboat” by Zacharey Jane and “On Chisel Beach” by Ian Mc Ewan.

6. Where is or would be your favourite travel destination?
Of course it would have to be India, such a beautifully unpredictable country however I currently have a dream to one day go to Iceland, Africa and Yemen.

7. What do you do to relax?
I love Sunday mornings in bed with a big cup of homemade soy chai tea and read the newspapers from cover to cover. A good coast walk in the Royal National Park always clears my mind and makes me feel revived.
