Hey there fellow Pyrmont resident, I know and you know that when living in the awesome happening village of Pyrmont one is never ever starved of the odd event or three to go see and check out. With Pyrmont being by the harbour and yet by the city at the same time, there is all manner of events to attend. From shindigs for the busy professional to awesome jazz sounds for the cultured music aficionados among you. Plenty of options.

However every now and then, if one is Australian, and one would love to get to know or indeed get a taste of an ancient culture, then I challenge you fellow Australian to instead not take a plane trip overseas, but rather take a very small step out of your comfort zone, stay in the country, save your dollars, and check out NAIDOC WEEK.

NAIDOC (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee) Week is being held from 6 – 13 July 2008. It is the chance to celebrate the history, achievements and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. A theme is chosen each year and in 2008 it is “Advance Australia Fair?” This important theme is to encourage people to reflect on the Australian ideal of a “fair go” and on the inequalities still experienced by Indigenous people.

During the week, celebrations will be held around Australia. These include an art exhibition at Five Dock Library, market stalls, an elders lunch, cultural performances, a flag raising ceremony, dinner celebrations, a march and more much more.

So take part and celebrate Indigenous culture with the wider community. For further information on events taking place, click here.
