We all want to be green, and we all have the best intentions to live sustainable life-styles, but we all know that it can be hard to change old habits, no matter how bad they might be. If you’re looking for easy ways to make your life-style a bit more eco-friendly, why not check out Pyrmont Village’s 25 Tips to Make Your Apartment an Eco-Friendly, Sustainable, Green Paradise to pick up some green tips (not only for apartment dwellers!) – it won’t just be the environment that will be healthier, but your body will thank you too.

One of my favourite tips from this list is shopping at thrift stores and consignment stores before buying new. If you know where to look, you can find almost anything you need – from clothes, to kitchen appliances, furniture and interior decorations – and the sense of accomplishment when you find that perfect item in the most unlikely place is almost as good as knowing you’ve helped out the environment (and probably purchased the item at a far cheaper price than if buying new!)

I’ve put together a list of my favourite places around Pyrmont to find anything thrifted, vintage, recycled or second-hand! If you know of anywhere that’s not on my list, leave us a comment and let us in on the secret!

Addison Rd Centre (ARC): This not-for-profit community centre in Marrickville is an eco-friendly dream. Reverse Garbage and The Bower are full of recycled materials and items of every imaginable type. I have seen everything here from old Mardi Gras floats to perfectly good furniture and electrical goods. There’s even a community garden tucked away! 142 Addison Rd, Marrickville (02 9569 7633).

Vinnies: The St. Vincent de Paul centres should be at the top of any thrifter’s list. From furniture to kitchen to clothing, you’ll find a huge array of everything recycled. Best of all they’re easy to find, and the money you spend goes to a good cause.

Mitchell Rd Auction Centre: Even if you’re not in the market for anything in particular, it’s worth visiting this sprawling warehouse in Alexandria to watch the auctioneers at work on a Monday – some of them cringe worthy, others born comedians. And there’s rarely a visit when a gem isn’t spied. The gallery upstairs has an atmosphere of old Hollywood that will keep you wandering around for hours discovering hidden corners. 76 Mitchell Rd, Alexandria (02 9310 7200).

Anglicare Depot: Ok, so I cheated a little bit with this one. It’s definitely not in Pyrmont, it’s not even really around Pyrmont, it is too good not to go on this list. The Anglicare depot in Summer Hill is where clothing, home wares and other assorted goodies go to be sorted, and where you can buy by it all by the kilo – $5 for the first kilo, $2.50 per kilo after. See, told you it was too good not to go on this list. 105 Carlton Crescent, Summer Hill (02 9798 7888).

Puff’n'Stuff: Crown St is a mecca for recycled clothing lovers. My favourite is Puff’n’ Stuff, and their cheaper “sale” store two down from the original. The shoes and handbags behind the unassuming shopfronts are perfect for those of us that prefer to buy their leather second-hand. 327 Crown St, Surry Hills 2010.

The now two-story vintage clothing shop has a sale area downstairs where it’s difficult not to find a fashion bargain! 180B Campbell St, Surry Hills 2010.

Ebay: I’ve kind of cheated again. It’s not in or around Pyrmont, but they will send most things you buy straight to your front door, and you can purchase pretty much anything your apartment needs, or your heart desires.

Garage Sales: Everyone loves a good garage sale as you’re never quite sure what you’ll find. I’ve been addicted ever since I found a straw hat decorated with plastic flowers for 10c when I was twelve. Look for local listings on http://pyrmontvillage.com.au/classifieds or www.egaragesales.com.au

Markets: Check out our Pyrmont Village articles about markets at Glebe and, for something different, indoor markets!
