pyrmont ultimo uptown festival ULTIMO PYRMONT UPTOWN FESTIVAL 2009 Living in Harmony

Head to Quarry Green for the 28th annual Ultimo Pyrmont UPTown Festival on Saturday, 21 March 2009. With two stages of live entertainment, the Festival fun starts at 11.00am and rolls on until 4:30pm. Presented by the Uniting Care’s Harris Community Centre, the festival theme this year looks to the future with “Living in Harmony: The People and the Planet in 2020″. It promises to be a colourful multicultural showcase of the talent in Ultimo Pyrmont and beyond (with some performers even from Surry Hills, Glebe and other world music locales.)

The Festival is a free event. Part of the Ultimo Pyrmont UPTown Festival’s proud tradition is that it is affordable to the whole community. Even the children’s rides – the trampoline bungee, pony rides and the animal farm are all provided free of charge. It is a day filled with music, dance performance, kids’ and youth activities. The festival offers roving performers, craft workshops, a teenage make-up tent, face painting, a reptile show and much more. There will be lucky dips and raffle prizes, food from around the world and terrific craft stalls.

The main stage serves up musical acts ranging with the African gospel harmonies of Pambuzuka Music, Liv’en Truths’ Hip Hop, Columbian music from Hispanic Artistic Express right through to local folk singer Ben Scott. Emerging new talent takes the stage with performers from Sydney Secondary College and the International Grammar School. The main stage finishes with the amazing and blazing percussion of Kai Feech. There is the contemporary Chinese dance group Jingdance Studio and the sexy and vibrant Tango Tinto to turn Ultimo into Buenos Aires (for a moment).

At our children and youth stage, the audience loves to become involved. There are highly interactive shows with the percussion workshop Master Drummer Tuza of Teambeat back by popular demand. Also returning are Liv’en Truth with their traditional Aboriginal performance and workshop. For a pure cold-blooded act, we have the reptiles of Feature Creatures. There is also the fast-moving crazy bundle of fun known as Marty and Emu’s Crazy Kid Show. Local talent comes to the fore here the Maybanke Youth centre performing Hip Hop and the trio of Maryanne Lawson, Rosemarie Mitchell and Amelia Blake delivering pop and R&B numbers. For the artist in you, there is Chinese calligraphy, grass craft and Chinese knots as well as a fun enviro art and musical instrument making workshop. Look out for street performers The Flying Pigs to bring the calypso spirit to the day.

So come out with the local community for the ultimate Ultimo and peerless Pyrmont event of the year.
