An article in the New York Times by the former Czech Republic president Vaclav Havel, “Our Moral Footprint”, makes you think about your own personal footprint and moral responsibility. Some of the points raised by Havel include:

  • “Nature is issuing warnings that we must not only stop the debt from growing but start to pay it back.”
  • “Whenever I reflect on the problems of today’s world….. I always end up confronting the moral question: what action is responsible or acceptable?”

The Global Footprint Network reports that globally we are demanding 1.3 planets to support our lifestyles. And, the CSIRO has estimated that while Australia had less than 1/3 of a percent of the world’s population, it produces 1.43 per cent of its CO2. Proportionally, this is more than 4.5 times our share.

So people of Pyrmont Village, check out your own footprint and let us know the results. To measure your footprint click here. The video below, “Released”, gives you some ideas on areas where you can reduce your footprint.
